I told Jesse to make a video of him reading a book.
I think he did pretty well!

Jesse is just starting to work on his program, with his first competition in April. And thanks to a Saturday evening event there’s no religious school today. So we came to the Sunday freestyle session, where he ran through it three times with music.
“Socks …?”
I’ve told friends, colleagues, neighbors and family: I’m going to Israel. I heard, “you’ll have an amazing time!” (Also, “Are you sure it’s safe?” from a few.)
The overnight flight, the sinus pain when landing, the sweaty lines at passport control? Not the most amazing time, but it all fell away pretty quickly. All I needed to do was look around and be open to the experience.
* The words of welcome at the airport were infused with meaning, blessed are those who come.
* The bus ride to Tel Aviv, passing farms and houses and apartment buildings, many topped with cisterns and solar panels, reminded me of the miracle of Israel’s existence, with its ingenuity in capturing precious natural resources.
* The quick walk to the beach was a chance to get to know some traveling companions a little better.
* And the wonderful welcome dinner, hearing from Momentum founder Lori Palatnik and meeting so many interesting, beautiful women, truly set the stage for this week.
I am sure all of those people were right: I’m going to have an amazing time.
Jesse was so fortunate to have the chance to go to the State Games! He competed Thursday morning in Vinton, Va., outside Roanoke.
He placed 3rd in the Basic 3 program (he competed against girls from Wisconsin, Maryland, New Jersey and Texas, many of whom won at home to qualify).

On Friday evening, we attended the opening ceremonies, which at the last minute were moved indoors, so the state teams didn’t march as planned.

But the Virginia athletes were all called onto the floor for the torch’s arrival and lighting.

At some point, Jesse wandered over to the torch lighting, because he wound up in the front-page picture in the local paper the next morning.

And an amazing part is that by medaling, he qualified to compete in the 2021 State Games in Ames, Iowa!
Jesse was the only skater for Basic 3, so he took first place!
